Searching Using Keywords

Keyword searches can be performed by using the Search box or by using the group of text boxes in the Show results with section. These boxes let you specify one or more keywords to perform a Boolean search.

This box...

Is equivalent to...

With all of the words

Placing an AND between each keyword.

With the exact phrase

Placing quotes (" ") around the phrase.

With at least one of the words

Placing an OR between each keyword.

Without the words

Placing a NOT before the keywords.

To enter a keyword search, click the Standard Options tab (the default tab). You are permitted to enter words or phrases in multiple boxes. All boxes are connected by an AND operator.

For instance, entering the following criteria should yield all stories containing the words "U.S. Chief Justice" except (AND NOT) the ones that mention Sandra Day O'Connor.
